Complete Guide to Hreflang Tags & Google Multi-Language SEO
Hreflang tags are HTML meta annotations specified in RFC 8288 and Google Webmaster guidelines to tell search crawlers (Googlebot, Bingbot, Yandex) which geographic language or country variation of a page to display in regional search results.
Language vs. Country Codes
The language must always follow ISO 639-1 (e.g. en, de, es), and the optional country must follow ISO 3166-1 Alpha-2 (e.g. US, GB). Mixing them up (e.g., using uk instead of gb) causes Google Search Console validation errors.
The Importance of x-default
The hreflang="x-default" attribute specifies the fallback landing page for international users whose browser language doesn’t match any of your specified translations or regional targeting.
Three Implementation Methods Supported by Google
- HTML Head tags: Quickest for small to medium websites. Paste inside
<head>. - XML Sitemaps: Best for enterprise sites or e-commerce stores with 10,000+ localized URLs to prevent excessive page HTML payloads.
- HTTP Response Headers: Mandatory for non-HTML files such as downloadable localized PDF brochures.
